- Status: Signed into law
- Term: 2011-2012
- House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
- Senate committee: Judiciary
- Subject: Crimes, Criminal Procedure and Corrections
- Chapter law: 151
The Story
It was introduced on January 4, 2012 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held public hearings on January 5, 2012 and February 2, 2012. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2012-1407s). The committee's amendment (1407s) was adopted on a voice vote on March 28, 2012, changing the text of the bill. On March 28, 2012 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 29, 2012 and was referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 24, 2012. The committee met in executive session on May 1, 2012 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted 12–1 to recommend that the House pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on May 9, 2012. On May 9, 2012 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 298–46. On May 15, 2012 the House failed “Reconsideration (Rep Laware)” on a division vote 72–256. The bill was enrolled on May 30, 2012 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 7, 2012, making it Chapter 151 of the session laws. It took effect on August 6, 2012.
