The Story

It was introduced on January 4, 2012 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 21, 2012. The committee met in executive session on February 21, 2012 to vote on its recommendation. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 0858h), and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 17–1. The report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (0858h) was adopted on a voice vote on March 8, 2012, changing the text of the bill. On March 8, 2012 the House voted to pass it with changes on a division vote 202–96. It crossed to the Senate and was referred to the Senate Public and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 27, 2012. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2012-1462s). The committee's amendment (1462s) was adopted on a voice vote on April 11, 2012, changing the text of the bill. On April 11, 2012 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On May 9, 2012 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate AM 1462s (Rep Bates)” on a division vote 203–77. The bill was enrolled on May 17, 2012 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 29, 2012, making it Chapter 94 of the session laws.
