- Subject: Education - General

The Story
It was introduced on February 10, 2010 and referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held public hearings on March 2, 2010 and March 8, 2010. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes. The committee's amendment (1014s) was adopted on a voice vote on March 17, 2010, changing the text of the bill. On March 17, 2010 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 18, 2010 and was referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 13, 2010. The committee met in executive session on May 4, 2010 to vote on its recommendation. The minority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 1942h). The committee's amendment (1824h) was adopted on a voice vote on May 13, 2010, changing the text of the bill. A floor amendment (2028h) was rejected on a division vote 127–157 on May 13, 2010. On May 13, 2010 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 209–82. On May 19, 2010 the Senate voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. Kelly. On May 19, 2010 the House adopted “House Accedes to Request for Comm of Conf (Rep Hess)” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on May 24, 2010 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. The bill was enrolled on June 2, 2010 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 20, 2010, making it Chapter 356 of the session laws.
