SB 157 (2010)

relative to the procedure for listing candidates on election ballots.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2009-2010
  • House committee: Election Law
  • Senate committee: Election Law and Veterans' Affairs
  • Subject: Elections
  • Chapter law: 330

The Story

It was introduced on January 8, 2009 and referred to the Senate Election Law and Veterans' Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 3, 2009. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes. The committee's amendment (1002s) was adopted on a roll call 21–2 on March 25, 2009, changing the text of the bill. On March 25, 2009 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 14–9 and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 26, 2009 and was referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 21, 2009. The committee met in executive session on April 22, 2009 and April 29, 2009. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on October 20, 2009, November 4, 2009 and November 17, 2009. The committee met in executive session on December 1, 2009 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 12–0, to recommend that the House pass it (amendment 2539h). The committee's amendment (2539h) was adopted on a voice vote on January 13, 2010, changing the text of the bill. On January 13, 2010 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. On January 13, 2010 the bill was referred to the Finance committee. The committee held work sessions on January 27, 2010 and February 2, 2010. The committee met in executive session on February 4, 2010 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted 24–1 to recommend that the House pass it. On February 17, 2010 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. On May 19, 2010 the Senate voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. Lasky. On May 19, 2010 the House adopted “House Accedes to Request for Comm of Conf (Rep Hess)” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on May 26, 2010 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. The bill was enrolled on June 2, 2010 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2427) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on July 20, 2010, making it Chapter 330 of the session laws.
