The Story
It was introduced on January 8, 2009 and referred to the Senate Commerce, Labor and Consumer Protection committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 27, 2009. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On February 4, 2009 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on February 12, 2009 and was referred to the House Commerce and Consumer Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 7, 2009. The committee held a work session on April 22, 2009. The committee met in executive session on April 22, 2009 and May 5, 2009. The committee voted unanimously, 18–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 1391h). The committee's amendment (1391h) was adopted on a voice vote on May 20, 2009, changing the text of the bill. On May 20, 2009 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On June 3, 2009 the Senate voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. Hassan. On June 10, 2009 the House adopted “House Accedes to Senate Request for Committee of Conference (Rep Butler)” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on June 16, 2009 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. The bill was enrolled on June 24, 2009 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 16, 2009, making it Chapter 243 of the session laws.
