relative to registration of criminal offenders and relative to involuntary commitment of sexually violent predators.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2009-2010
  • House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Crimes, Criminal Procedure and Corrections
  • Chapter law: 306

The Story

It was introduced on January 8, 2009 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 31, 2009. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes. The committee's amendment (1161s) was adopted on a voice vote on April 8, 2009, changing the text of the bill. A floor amendment (1295s), offered by Sen. Reynolds, was adopted on a roll call 22–0 on April 8, 2009, changing the text of the bill. On April 8, 2009 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on April 9, 2009 and was referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 21, 2009. The committee held work sessions on April 29, 2009 and May 7, 2009. The committee met in executive session on May 7, 2009 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 14–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 1456h). The committee's amendment (1456h) was adopted on a voice vote on May 20, 2009, changing the text of the bill. On May 20, 2009 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On June 3, 2009 the Senate voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. Reynolds. On June 3, 2009 the House adopted “House Accedes to Senate Request for Committee of Conference (Rep Norelli)” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on June 16, 2009 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. The bill was enrolled on June 24, 2009 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2364) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on July 31, 2009, making it Chapter 306 of the session laws.
