The Story
It was introduced on January 8, 2009 and referred to the House Commerce and Consumer Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 19, 2009. The committee held a work session on March 12, 2009. The committee met in executive session on March 17, 2009 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 17–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 0405h). The committee's amendment (0405h) was adopted on a voice vote on March 24, 2009, changing the text of the bill. On March 24, 2009 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on April 8, 2009 and was referred to the Senate Commerce, Labor and Consumer Protection committee. The committee held public hearings on April 21, 2009 and April 28, 2009. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes. The committee's amendment (1550s) was adopted on a voice vote on May 13, 2009, changing the text of the bill. A floor amendment (1631s), offered by Sen. Hassan, was adopted on a voice vote on May 13, 2009, changing the text of the bill. On May 13, 2009 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On June 3, 2009 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendments #1550s(NT) & #1631s(NT) (Rep Butler)” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 2009 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2077) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on July 29, 2009, making it Chapter 285 of the session laws.
