  • Term: 2009-2010
  • House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
  • Senate committee: Judiciary

The Story

It was introduced on January 8, 2009 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 10, 2009. The committee met in executive session on March 12, 2009 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted 15–1 to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 0771h). The committee's amendment (0771h) was adopted on a voice vote on March 25, 2009, changing the text of the bill. On March 25, 2009 the House voted to pass it with changes on a division vote 209–65. It crossed to the Senate on April 29, 2009 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 19, 2009. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes. On June 3, 2009 the Senate rejected a motion to lay it on the table on a roll call 11–13, on a motion by Sen. Gatsas. The committee's amendment (1985s) was adopted on a voice vote on June 3, 2009, changing the text of the bill. On June 3, 2009 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 13–11 and ordered it to a third reading. On June 10, 2009 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate AM #1985s (Rep Shurtleff)” on a division vote 220–92. The bill was enrolled on June 10, 2009 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 29, 2009, making it Chapter 284 of the session laws.
