The Story
It was introduced on January 8, 2009 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 3, 2009. The committee met in executive session on February 4, 2009 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 18–0, to recommend that the House pass it. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on February 12, 2009. On February 12, 2009 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 246–111. It crossed to the Senate on March 18, 2009 and was referred to the Senate Election Law and Veterans' Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 14, 2009. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes. The committee's amendment (1388s) was adopted on a voice vote on April 29, 2009, changing the text of the bill. On April 29, 2009 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On May 20, 2009 the House adopted “House Concurs with Senate Amendment #1388s (Rep Pierce)” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 27, 2009 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 22, 2009, making it Chapter 127 of the session laws.
