The Story

It was introduced on January 31, 2007 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 12, 2007. The committee met in executive session on March 14, 2007 to vote on its recommendation. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on May 24, 2007, June 14, 2007, August 8, 2007, August 22, 2007, September 12, 2007, September 19, 2007, September 26, 2007, October 10, 2007, October 17, 2007, October 25, 2007 and October 30, 2007. The committee met in executive session on November 8, 2007 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted 10–7 to recommend that the House pass it (amendment 2635h), and the report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (2635h) was adopted on a voice vote on January 16, 2008, changing the text of the bill. On January 16, 2008 the House voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 199–121. It crossed to the Senate on February 21, 2008 and was referred to the Senate Election Law and Internal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 19, 2008. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On March 27, 2008 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on April 8, 2008 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 16, 2008, making it Chapter 55 of the session laws.
