The Story
It was introduced on January 4, 2007 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 8, 2007. The committee met in executive session on March 20, 2007 to vote on its recommendation. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on April 25, 2007, June 5, 2007, August 7, 2007, August 8, 2007, August 14, 2007, August 15, 2007, August 21, 2007, August 22, 2007, August 28, 2007, August 29, 2007, September 11, 2007, September 12, 2007, September 18, 2007, September 19, 2007, September 25, 2007, September 27, 2007, October 2, 2007, October 3, 2007, October 4, 2007 and October 9, 2007. The committee met in executive session on November 1, 2007 to vote on its recommendation. The committee voted unanimously, 15–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2476h), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The committee's amendment (2476h) was adopted on a voice vote on January 2, 2008, changing the text of the bill. On January 2, 2008 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on January 31, 2008 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 25, 2008. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On May 1, 2008 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on May 21, 2008 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (1735) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 16, 2008, making it Chapter 203 of the session laws.
