  • Term: 2005-2006

The Story

It was introduced on February 16, 2006 and referred to the Senate Public and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held public hearings on March 8, 2006 and March 15, 2006. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 1390). The committee's amendment (1390) was adopted on a voice vote on March 22, 2006, changing the text of the bill. On March 22, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 16–8 and ordered it to a third reading. On March 22, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it. It crossed to the House on March 28, 2006 and was referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 4, 2006. The committee voted unanimously, 14–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 1840h), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 26, 2006 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 11, 2006 the Senate adopted “Sen. Roberge Non Concur with House Amendment Requests C of C” on a voice vote. On May 11, 2006 the House adopted “House Accedes to Senate Request for Conf Comm” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on May 15, 2006 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On May 24, 2006 the House adopted “Conf Comm Report” on a roll call 219–121. On May 24, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it. The bill was enrolled on May 24, 2006 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. It became law without the governor's signature, as Chapter 300. The governor neither signed it nor returned it, and the docket records it as enacted under Part II, Article 44 of the state constitution.
