  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2005-2006
  • House committee: Judiciary
  • Senate committee: Public and Municipal Affairs
  • Subject: Miscellaneous
  • Chapter law: 324

The Story

It was introduced on January 4, 2006 and referred to the Senate Public and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held public hearings on January 19, 2006 and February 8, 2006. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On February 16, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it on a roll call 24–0 and ordered it to a third reading. On February 16, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it. It crossed to the House on February 22, 2006 and was referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 28, 2006. The committee held work sessions on April 6, 2006 and April 12, 2006. The committee voted unanimously, 16–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 1928h). The committee's amendment (1928h) was adopted on a voice vote on April 26, 2006, changing the text of the bill. On April 26, 2006 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On May 11, 2006 the Senate adopted “Sen. Roberge Non Concur With House Am Request For C of C” on a voice vote. On May 11, 2006 the House adopted “House Accedes to Senate Request for Conf Comm” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on May 15, 2006 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On May 24, 2006 the House adopted “Conf Comm Report” on a voice vote. On May 24, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 24, 2006 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2398) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 23, 2006, making it Chapter 324 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2007.
