The Story

It was introduced on January 26, 2005 and referred to the House Commerce committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 22, 2005. The committee held work sessions on March 16, 2005 and March 22, 2005. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on September 20, 2005, October 11, 2005 and October 25, 2005. The committee voted unanimously, 19–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On January 4, 2006 the House voted to pass it with changes, then referred it on to the House Ways and Means committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 24, 2006. The committee voted unanimously, 13–0, to recommend that the House pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On February 1, 2006 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on February 9, 2006 and was referred to the Senate Banks and Insurance committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 7, 2006. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 1716). The committee's amendment (1716) was adopted on a voice vote on April 20, 2006, changing the text of the bill. On April 20, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On April 20, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it. On May 4, 2006 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. An enrolled bill amendment (2241) was adopted on May 11, 2006. These correct technical errors found after passage. The bill was enrolled on May 24, 2006 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (2241) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 5, 2006, making it Chapter 245 of the session laws. It took effect on July 1, 2006.
