The Story
It was introduced on January 26, 2005 and referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 24, 2005. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee voted unanimously, 16–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On January 4, 2006 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on January 4, 2006 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 24, 2006. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 0591). The committee's amendment (0591) was adopted on a voice vote on February 2, 2006, changing the text of the bill. On February 2, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On February 10, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it. On April 5, 2006 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on April 13, 2006 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on April 18, 2006. It took effect on April 18, 2006.
