HB 221 (2006)

relative to eligibility for absentee ballots.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2005-2006
  • House committee: Election Law
  • Senate committee: Internal Affairs
  • Subject: Elections
  • Chapter law: 136

The Story

It was introduced on January 6, 2005 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 25, 2005. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on June 14, 2005, October 5, 2005 and October 19, 2005. The committee voted unanimously, 18–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On January 4, 2006 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on January 5, 2006 and was referred to the Senate Internal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 8, 2006. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 1672). The committee's amendment (1672) was adopted on a voice vote on April 13, 2006, changing the text of the bill. On April 13, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On April 13, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it. On May 4, 2006 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 15, 2006 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 22, 2006, making it Chapter 136 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2007.
