- Status: Vetoed, override failed
- Term: 2005-2006

The Story
It was introduced on January 4, 2006 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 7, 2006. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 1182h), and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 12–4. The report was placed on the regular calendar. The committee's amendment (1182h) was adopted on March 9, 2006, changing the text of the bill. On March 9, 2006 the House voted to pass it with changes on a roll call 184–136. It crossed to the Senate on March 16, 2006 and was referred to the Senate Internal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 12, 2006. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On May 4, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it on a roll call 16–7 and ordered it to a third reading. On May 4, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it. The bill was enrolled on May 15, 2006 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on May 23, 2006. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On June 28, 2006 the House voted 197–141 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
