The Story

It was introduced on January 4, 2006 and referred to the House Municipal and County Government committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 24, 2006. The committee voted unanimously, 14–0, to recommend that the House pass it with changes (amendment 0772h), and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 7, 2006 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on March 16, 2006 and was referred to the Senate Public and Municipal Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 19, 2006. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 1878). The committee's amendment (1878) was adopted on a voice vote on May 4, 2006, changing the text of the bill. On May 4, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On May 4, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it. On May 11, 2006 the House voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. On May 11, 2006 the Senate adopted “Sen. Roberge Accede to House Request for Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on May 16, 2006 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On May 24, 2006 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote. On May 24, 2006 the House adopted “Conf Comm Rprt” on a division vote 222–54. The bill was enrolled on May 24, 2006 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 15, 2006, making it Chapter 285 of the session laws. It took effect on August 14, 2006.
