The Story

It was introduced on January 26, 2005 and referred to the House Children and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 15, 2005. The committee voted unanimously, 14–0, to recommend that the House pass it, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 30, 2005 the House voted to pass it. It crossed to the Senate on March 31, 2005 and was referred to the Senate Health and Human Services committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 26, 2005. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 1603). The committee's amendment (1603) was adopted on a voice vote on June 2, 2005, changing the text of the bill. On June 8, 2005 the House voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. On June 9, 2005 the Senate adopted “Senator Martel Accede to House Request for Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on June 21, 2005 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On June 29, 2005 the Senate adopted “Committee of Conference Report” on a voice vote. On June 29, 2005 the House adopted “Conf Comm Report” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 29, 2005 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 22, 2005, making it Chapter 272 of the session laws. It took effect on September 20, 2005.
