SB 513 (2004)
relative to the death penalty.
- Status: Vetoed, override failed
- Term: 2003-2004
- House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
- Senate committee: Judiciary
- Subject: Crimes, Criminal Procedure and Corrections
The Story
It was introduced on January 7, 2004 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 9, 2004. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On February 19, 2004 the Senate voted to pass it. It crossed to the House on February 19, 2004 and was referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 24, 2004. The majority of the committee recommended that the House make no recommendation on a tied vote, 8–8, which carries no majority. On April 22, 2004 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 272–72. The bill was enrolled on April 29, 2004 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on May 10, 2004. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On June 17, 2004 the Senate voted 11–13 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
