SB 419 (2002)

relative to notification of groundwater contamination and repealing certain MTBE notification requirements for public water systems.

  • Status: Vetoed, override failed
  • Term: 2001-2002
  • House committee: Resources, Recreation and Development
  • Senate committee: Environment
  • Subject: Environment - Conservation

The Story

It was introduced on January 31, 2002 and referred to the Senate Environment committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 13, 2002. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On February 14, 2002 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on February 14, 2002 and was referred to the House Resources, Recreation and Development committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 13, 2002. The committee held a work session on March 20, 2002. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 14–1. On April 4, 2002 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On April 25, 2002 the Senate adopted “Sen. Johnson Concur with House Amendment” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 2, 2002 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on May 15, 2002. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On May 22, 2002 the Senate voted 12–11 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
