The Story

It was introduced on January 31, 2002 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 13, 2002. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On February 20, 2002 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on February 21, 2002 and was referred to the House Children and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 14, 2002. The committee held work sessions on March 19, 2002, April 1, 2002 and April 2, 2002. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 8–7. On April 17, 2002 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On April 25, 2002 the Senate adopted “Requests Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. On April 25, 2002 the House adopted “House Acceded to req for Conf Comm” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on April 29, 2002 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill.
