The Story
It was introduced on January 2, 2002 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 30, 2002. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 2697). On February 20, 2002 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on February 21, 2002 and was referred to the House Children and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 14, 2002. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 12–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 17, 2002 the House voted to pass it with changes. On April 25, 2002 the Senate adopted “Sen. Gordon Concur with House Amendment” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 2, 2002 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 15, 2002, making it Chapter 152 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2003.
