SB 155-LOCAL (2002)

establishing penalties for frivolous actions against teachers and other education employees.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2001-2002
  • House committee: Judiciary
  • Senate committee: Education
  • Subject: Education - General
  • Chapter law: 149

The Story

It was introduced on February 15, 2001 and referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 14, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 0881). On April 19, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on April 19, 2001 and was referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 2, 2001. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held work sessions on July 31, 2001, September 25, 2001, October 17, 2001 and November 2, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 17–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On January 2, 2002 the House voted to pass it with changes. On April 25, 2002 the Senate adopted “Sen. O'Hearn Concur with House Amendment” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on April 25, 2002 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (3692) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The bill was enrolled on May 2, 2002 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 15, 2002, making it Chapter 149 of the session laws. It took effect on July 14, 2002.
