SB 141 (2002)
relative to proof of qualifications for voter registration.
- Status: Vetoed, override failed
- Term: 2001-2002
- House committee: Election Law
- Senate committee: Public Affairs
- Subject: Elections
The Story
It was introduced on February 15, 2001 and referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 20, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On March 29, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 29, 2001 and was referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 22, 2001. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it. On January 10, 2002 the House voted to pass it on a roll call 233–121. The bill was enrolled on January 24, 2002 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on February 7, 2002. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On May 22, 2002 the Senate voted 12–11 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
