HB 622 (2002)
relative to the time period for the executive council to confirm nominees to the supreme court.
- Status: Vetoed, override failed
- Term: 2001-2002
- House committee: Judiciary
- Senate committee: Judiciary
- Subject: Miscellaneous
The Story
It was introduced on February 8, 2001 and referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 9, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it by a vote of 14–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 18, 2001 the House voted to pass it. It crossed to the Senate on May 1, 2001 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 22, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On June 12, 2001 the Senate adopted “Sen. Gordon Sub Motion of Rereferred to Committee” on a voice vote. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On January 17, 2002 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on March 7, 2002 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on March 26, 2002. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On May 22, 2002 the House voted 175–166 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
