HB 424 (2002)

establishing a committee to study the exemption from property taxes for not-for-profit hospitals.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2001-2002
  • House committee: Ways and Means
  • Senate committee: Public Affairs
  • Subject: Study Committees and Commissions
  • Chapter law: 121

The Story

It was introduced on January 25, 2001 and referred to the House Ways and Means committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 14, 2001. The committee held a work session on March 15, 2001. The committee retained the bill, holding it for further work rather than reporting it out this year. The committee held a work session on November 8, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House kill it by a vote of 13–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on January 2, 2002. On January 2, 2002 the House voted to pass it on a division vote 243–112. It crossed to the Senate on January 2, 2002 and was referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 19, 2002. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On April 16, 2002 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on May 2, 2002 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 8, 2002, making it Chapter 121 of the session laws. It took effect on May 8, 2002.
