The Story

It was introduced on June 26, 2001 and referred to the House Children and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 3, 2002. The committee held work sessions on January 22, 2002, January 30, 2002, February 7, 2002 and February 13, 2002. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 13–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 6, 2002 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on March 14, 2002 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 3, 2002. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 3344). On April 11, 2002 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote, then referred it on to the Senate Finance committee. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On April 16, 2002 the Senate voted to lay it on the table on a voice vote. On April 18, 2002 the Senate adopted “Remove From Table” on a voice vote. On April 18, 2002 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On April 25, 2002 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 2, 2002 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (3764) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on May 18, 2002, making it Chapter 273 of the session laws. It took effect on May 18, 2002.
