HB 1286 (2002)

increasing the time period during which warrantless arrests for violations of the stalking law and violations of restraining orders in domestic cases are permitted.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2001-2002
  • House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Crimes, Criminal Procedure and Corrections
  • Chapter law: 79

The Story

It was introduced on June 26, 2001 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 9, 2002. The committee held work sessions on January 29, 2002, February 5, 2002 and February 12, 2002. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it unanimously, 11–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On February 21, 2002 the House voted to pass it. It crossed to the Senate on March 6, 2002 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 3, 2002. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 3284). On April 11, 2002 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On April 17, 2002 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on April 25, 2002 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 2, 2002, making it Chapter 79 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2003.
