The Story
It was introduced on June 26, 2001 and referred to the House Municipal and County Government committee. The committee held public hearings on January 15, 2002 and January 22, 2002. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 16–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On February 21, 2002 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on March 6, 2002 and was referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 28, 2002. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On April 10, 2002 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on April 17, 2002 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on April 26, 2002, making it Chapter 58 of the session laws. It took effect on June 1, 2002.
