The Story
It was introduced on January 4, 2001 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 7, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 0149). On February 22, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 29, 2001 and was referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 25, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 12–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On May 17, 2001 the House voted to pass it with changes. On May 24, 2001 the Senate adopted “Sen. Gordon Concur with House Amendment” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 31, 2001 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (1452) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The bill was enrolled on June 13, 2001 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 21, 2001, making it Chapter 98 of the session laws. It took effect on July 21, 2001.
