HB 723 (2001)
relative to vacancies in county offices.
- Status: Vetoed, override failed
- Term: 2001-2002
- House committee: Municipal and County Government
- Senate committee: Public Affairs
- Subject: Miscellaneous
The Story
It was introduced on February 15, 2001 and referred to the House Municipal and County Government committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 27, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 10–2, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 18, 2001 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on May 1, 2001 and was referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 15, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 1208). On May 24, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On May 31, 2001 the House voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. On June 7, 2001 the Senate adopted “Sen. Roberge Accede to House Request for Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on June 14, 2001 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On June 26, 2001 the Senate adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. On June 26, 2001 the House adopted “Conf Comm Report”. The bill was enrolled on June 26, 2001 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on July 13, 2001. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On December 12, 2001 the House voted 225–148 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
