HB 703 (2001)

relative to durable powers of attorney.

  • Status: Signed into law
  • Term: 2001-2002
  • House committee: Judiciary
  • Senate committee: Judiciary
  • Subject: Miscellaneous
  • Chapter law: 257

The Story

It was introduced on February 15, 2001 and referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 14, 2001. The committee held work sessions on March 20, 2001 and April 3, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 16–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 18, 2001 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on May 1, 2001 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 16, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 1590). On June 12, 2001 the Senate voted to lay it on the table on a voice vote. On June 12, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote. A floor amendment (1676), offered by Sen. Fernald, was adopted on a voice vote on June 12, 2001, changing the text of the bill. On June 12, 2001 the Senate adopted “Sen. Gordon Accede to House Request for Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. On June 13, 2001 the House voted to reject the other chamber's changes. A committee of conference met on June 21, 2001 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On June 26, 2001 the Senate adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. On June 26, 2001 the House adopted “Conf Comm Report” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 26, 2001 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (1869) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on July 13, 2001, making it Chapter 257 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2002.
