  • Term: 2001-2002
  • House committee: Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs
  • Senate committee: Public Institutions, Health and Human Services

  • Chapter law: 253

The Story

It was introduced on February 8, 2001 and referred to the House Health, Human Services and Elderly Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 7, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 16–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 22, 2001 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on March 29, 2001 and was referred to the Senate Public Institutions, Health and Human Services committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 8, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 1372). On May 31, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote, then referred it on to the Senate Finance committee. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On June 7, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On June 12, 2001 the Senate adopted “Sen. Wheeler Accede to Request for Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. On June 13, 2001 the House voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on June 19, 2001 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On June 26, 2001 the Senate adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. On June 26, 2001 the House adopted “Conf Comm Report”. The bill was enrolled on June 26, 2001 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 13, 2001, making it Chapter 253 of the session laws. It took effect on July 13, 2001.
