HB 503 (2001)
relative to incompatible offices.
- Status: Vetoed, override failed
- Term: 2001-2002
- House committee: Election Law
- Senate committee: Public Affairs
- Subject: Elections
The Story
It was introduced on January 25, 2001 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 15, 2001. The committee held work sessions on March 20, 2001 and March 27, 2001. The majority recommended that the House pass it, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 12–7. On April 19, 2001 the House adopted “Susp Rules for Deadline to Apr 26” on a voice vote. On April 19, 2001 the House adopted “Special Order to Apr 25” on a voice vote. On April 25, 2001 the House voted to pass it on a division vote 185–107. It crossed to the Senate on May 9, 2001 and was referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on June 5, 2001. On June 7, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote 14–9 and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on June 26, 2001 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor vetoed it on July 5, 2001. The legislature can override a veto with a two-thirds vote in both chambers. On December 12, 2001 the House voted 220–150 on overriding the governor's veto on a roll call, and the veto was sustained, failing to meet the two thirds threshold.
