The Story

It was introduced on January 25, 2001 and referred to the House Municipal and County Government committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 13, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it unanimously, 12–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 22, 2001 the House voted to pass it. It crossed to the Senate on March 29, 2001 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 25, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 1497). On June 7, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. A floor amendment (1533), offered by Sen. Eaton, was adopted on a voice vote on June 7, 2001, changing the text of the bill. On June 13, 2001 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 13, 2001 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 21, 2001, making it Chapter 93 of the session laws. It took effect on June 21, 2001.
