  • Term: 2001-2002
  • House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
  • Senate committee: Judiciary

The Story

It was introduced on January 25, 2001 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 6, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it unanimously, 15–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 22, 2001 the House voted to pass it. It crossed to the Senate on March 29, 2001 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 25, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 1587). On June 12, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On June 12, 2001 the Senate adopted “Sen. Gordon Accede to House Request for Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. On June 13, 2001 the House voted to reject the other chamber's changes. On June 26, 2001 the Senate adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. On June 26, 2001 the House adopted “Conf Comm Report”. The bill was enrolled on June 26, 2001 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 13, 2001, making it Chapter 233 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2002.
