The Story

It was introduced on January 4, 2001 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 20, 2001. The committee held a work session on March 20, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it by a vote of 13–5. On April 19, 2001 the House adopted “Susp Rules for Deadline to Apr 26” on a voice vote. On April 19, 2001 the House adopted “Special Order to Apr 25” on a voice vote. On April 25, 2001 the House voted to pass it on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on May 9, 2001 and was referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on June 5, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 1464). On June 7, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On June 12, 2001 the Senate adopted “Sen. Roberge Accede to Request for Committee of Conference” on a voice vote. On June 13, 2001 the House voted to reject the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on June 19, 2001 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On June 26, 2001 the Senate adopted “Conference Committee Report” on a voice vote. On June 26, 2001 the House adopted “Conf Comm Report”. The bill was enrolled on June 26, 2001 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 16, 2001, making it Chapter 272 of the session laws. It took effect on September 14, 2001.
