The Story

It was introduced on January 3, 2001 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 9, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes by a vote of 19–1, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On February 22, 2001 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on March 29, 2001 and was referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 17, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On May 1, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on May 9, 2001 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 15, 2001, making it Chapter 21 of the session laws. It took effect on May 15, 2001.
