The Story
It was introduced on January 3, 2001 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 17, 2001. The committee held a work session on January 17, 2001. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 13–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On February 15, 2001 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on February 15, 2001 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 30, 2001. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On June 7, 2001 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on June 26, 2001 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (1830) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on July 11, 2001, making it Chapter 214 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2002.
