The Story

It was introduced on January 5, 2000 and referred to the Senate Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 12, 2000. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 3608). On March 9, 2000 the Senate voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On March 9, 2000 the Senate adopted “OT3rdg” on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 9, 2000 and was referred to the House Education committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 4, 2000. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 18–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. The bill was taken off the consent calendar on April 20, 2000. On April 20, 2000 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. On April 27, 2000 the Senate adopted “Sen. McCarley Concur with House Amendment” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 11, 2000 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 15, 2000, making it Chapter 141 of the session laws. It took effect on May 15, 2000.
