  • Term: 1999-2000
  • House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety

The Story

It was introduced on January 5, 2000 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 11, 2000. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 15–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 29, 2000 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on April 6, 2000 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 26, 2000. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 4560). On May 18, 2000 the Senate adopted “Sen. Trombly Laid on Table” on a voice vote. On May 18, 2000 the Senate adopted “Remove From Table” on a voice vote. A floor amendment (4607), offered by Sen. Gordon, was adopted on a voice vote on May 18, 2000, changing the text of the bill. On May 18, 2000 the House voted to reject the other chamber's changes. On May 23, 2000 the Senate adopted “Sen. Pignatelli Acced to House Request for C of C” on a voice vote. A committee of conference met on May 25, 2000 to try to settle the differences between the two chambers' versions of the bill. On May 31, 2000 the Senate adopted “Conf. Comm Report” on a voice vote. On May 31, 2000 the House adopted “Conf Comm Report” on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 31, 2000 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (4771) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 21, 2000, making it Chapter 305 of the session laws. It took effect on June 21, 2000.
