The Story
It was introduced on January 5, 2000 and referred to the House Children and Family Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 25, 2000. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 10–4. On February 17, 2000 the House voted to pass it with changes on a division vote 179–109, then referred it on to the House Finance committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 8, 2000. The committee held a work session on March 15, 2000. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 24–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 29, 2000 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on April 6, 2000 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 26, 2000. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On April 27, 2000 the Senate adopted “Committee Report Ought to Pass” on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on May 11, 2000 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on May 23, 2000, making it Chapter 150 of the session laws. It took effect on July 22, 2000.
