HB 1431 (2000)
relative to protective orders in domestic violence cases.
- Status: Signed into law
- Term: 1999-2000
- House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
- Senate committee: Judiciary
- Subject: Civil Actions
- Chapter law: 230
The Story
It was introduced on January 5, 2000 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 18, 2000. The committee held work sessions on February 23, 2000, March 7, 2000 and March 21, 2000. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 13–0. On March 29, 2000 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on April 6, 2000 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 3, 2000. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 4379). On May 11, 2000 the Senate adopted “Committee Report Ought to Pass with Amendment” on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On May 17, 2000 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 18, 2000 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (4614) was adopted on a voice vote to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 1, 2000, making it Chapter 230 of the session laws. It took effect on July 1, 2000.
