HB 1424 (2000)
relative to reevaluation of a person's competency to stand trial.
- Status: Signed into law
- Term: 1999-2000
- House committee: Criminal Justice and Public Safety
- Senate committee: Judiciary
- Subject: Miscellaneous
- Chapter law: 229
The Story
It was introduced on January 5, 2000 and referred to the House Criminal Justice and Public Safety committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 25, 2000. The committee held work sessions on February 15, 2000 and February 16, 2000. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 16–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 23, 2000 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on March 23, 2000 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 19, 2000. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it with changes (amendment 4221). On April 27, 2000 the Senate adopted “Committee Report Ought to Pass with Amendment” on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On May 17, 2000 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 18, 2000 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor — and an enrolled bill amendment (4623) was adopted to correct technical errors found after passage. The governor signed it on June 1, 2000, making it Chapter 229 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2001.
