- Status: Signed into law
- Term: 1999-2000
- House committee: Election Law
- Senate committee: Public Affairs
- Subject: Elections
- Chapter law: 226
The Story
It was introduced on January 5, 2000 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 13, 2000. The committee held work sessions on January 26, 2000, February 3, 2000 and March 8, 2000. The majority recommended that the House pass it with changes, and the minority recommended that the House kill it, by a vote of 9–6. On March 29, 2000 the House voted to pass it with changes on a voice vote. It crossed to the Senate on April 6, 2000 and was referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held public hearings on May 10, 2000 and May 17, 2000. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On May 18, 2000 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote. A floor amendment (4601), offered by Sen. F. King, was adopted on a voice vote on May 18, 2000, changing the text of the bill. On May 18, 2000 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on May 18, 2000 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 1, 2000, making it Chapter 226 of the session laws. It took effect on June 1, 2000.
