The Story

It was introduced on January 5, 2000 and referred to the House Election Law committee. The committee held a public hearing on January 6, 2000. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it unanimously, 15–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On January 27, 2000 the House voted to pass it. It crossed to the Senate on February 3, 2000 and was referred to the Senate Public Affairs committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 23, 2000. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On March 16, 2000 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on March 23, 2000 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on April 3, 2000, making it Chapter 34 of the session laws.
