The Story

It was introduced on January 5, 2000 and referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 2, 2000. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it unanimously, 14–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On March 9, 2000 the House voted to pass it. It crossed to the Senate on March 16, 2000 and was referred to the Senate Public Institutions, Health and Human Services committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 9, 2000. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On May 18, 2000 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. The bill was enrolled on May 18, 2000 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 1, 2000, making it Chapter 221 of the session laws. It took effect on July 31, 2000.
