The Story
It was introduced on January 7, 1999 and referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on February 17, 1999. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On March 4, 1999 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. It crossed to the House on March 25, 1999 and was referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on April 28, 1999. The committee held a work session on May 4, 1999. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes unanimously, 12–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On May 20, 1999 the House voted to pass it with changes. On June 8, 1999 the Senate adopted “Senate Concurs W/House Amendment” on a voice vote, on a motion by Sen. Pignatelli. The bill was enrolled on June 17, 1999 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on June 25, 1999, making it Chapter 148 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2000.
