The Story
It was introduced on February 16, 1999 and referred to the House Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on March 8, 1999. The majority of the committee recommended that the House pass it with changes (amendment 2) unanimously, 12–0, and the report was placed on the consent calendar. On April 14, 1999 the House voted to pass it with changes. It crossed to the Senate on April 20, 1999 and was referred to the Senate Judiciary committee. The committee held a public hearing on May 26, 1999. The committee recommended that the Senate pass it. On June 8, 1999 the Senate voted to pass it on a voice vote and ordered it to a third reading. On June 16, 1999 the House voted to agree to the other chamber's changes on a voice vote. The bill was enrolled on June 24, 1999 — the final check of the text before it goes to the governor. The governor signed it on July 1, 1999, making it Chapter 176 of the session laws. It took effect on January 1, 2000.
